Umashankar Pandey Padma Shri: The Pioneer of Water Conservation

Umashankar Pandey is a revered figure in India, a grassroots activist whose tireless efforts have earned him the prestigious Padma Shri award, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors. Hailing from the drought-prone Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, Pandey has dedicated his life to a single, powerful mission: water conservation and management. The “Khet Ka Pani Khet Mein, Gaon Ka Pani Gaon Mein” Movement

This mantra is the core of his groundbreaking Jal Gram Abhiyan (Water Village Campaign). His methods involve a blend of traditional wisdom and modern techniques, encouraging villagers to build and maintain small, localised structures to capture and store rainwater. These include:

• Farm ponds (khet talab): Small ponds dug in fields to collect rainwater for irrigation.
• Check dams: Low walls built across streams to slow down water flow and allow it to seep into the ground.
• Recharging old wells: Reviving and deepening traditional wells to increase groundwater levels.

These initiatives, driven by community participation and local resources, have proven incredibly effective. They have not only provided water for irrigation and drinking but have also replenished groundwater, improved soil health, and boosted agricultural productivity.
